I'm bringing my daughter from Washington to Arizona for school. I thought this would be a good time to scope out locations/areas/land, etc. Not to mention the various firearms shops.

At two (2) different shops in Flagstaff I was asked if I was from the area. When I briefly explained I was passing through, I was told - I kid you not - "I can't talk to you about firearms if you're not from Arizona." It was it, and that was that. They wouldn't answer questions regarding reloading stuff they had for sale because I was not from Arizona.

With that being said, i went into many other shops and they were as friendly as anything.

Seriously, what is going on in Arizona? Is this "normal"? Is this something new in Arizona about talking to out-of-staters?

Not normal. Wonder what's going on?

About 4-yrs ago, I was scoping out places to move from CA to be close to inlaws in Chandler. I also checked out gun shoppes in area. That really sealed deal as they were so friendly and helpful.

My guess is that they were protecting themselves against ATF coming into their store and accusing them of selling a firearm to someone from another State. Their actions, to me, seem to be overly-cautious because reloading stuff is not a firearm and as such, doesn't require a background check. Maybe they feared that any powder you might have bought might end-up being used to make a bomb. With all the looney-toons nutcases running around today, the shop has decided to go DEFCON 1 in protecting itself against ever being investigated for selling something to someone who shouldn't have what he wants to buy.

Washington state has some pretty severe restrictions. That being said, it is not against the law for them to talk to you about firearms. They can legally sell you a long gun, as long as it is legal in your state. Handguns can not be sold in any state to anyone from another state unless shipped to an FFL in your state (federal law). The owners are probably ignorant of what they can and can't do - they should educate themselves and do better. My local gun shops would gladly talk to you about firearms, reloading supplies, etc. - there is NO law against that. In fact, they would welcome you to America at one of them.

So you are legally able to purchase handguns in another state. Or online. It has to be shipped from FFL to FFL. I've done it and friends and family have too.

I'd imagine nvshooter is correct in an over protective employee or shop.
We all remember fast and furious and that was mostly in AZ so it might also be fallout from that.

Btw you can fly with a pistol and long gun too. Checked in and in a locked hard box. You're allowed up to 10lbs of ammunition per checked in bag.

I hear and understand everything you've posted. I just thought it odd that they wouldn't even talk to me regarding reloading items (brass and reloading dies for 300 win mag they had out for sale).

I just thought it very odd, especially in Arizona.

Also the whole "Arizona Republicans for Harris" thing that is going on all over. Weird. Absolutely weird....

... ... looking to belong.
My useless opinion is, this is why we have facebook and all the other social media places. I'm on just one: Quora. My God, but are there some idiots on that one! I once asked, "If I use the word "democracy" eight or nine times in a two-line question, will people think I'm really hip, aware and cool?" I asked this because I see so many questions regarding "Is Trump going to destroy democracy in the United States?" It's obvious the morons who ask these kinds of questions have no idea as to how styooo-pid they sound. The Framers wrote the Constitution to specifically disallow one man to become a tyrant; that's why the government is divided onto three co-equal branches. That seems to be lost on today's libturds. On the talking heads on MSDNC and CNN, too...
