I work in Las Vegas a couple times a month now. I've stayed at most of the "reasonable" priced hotels and casinos there and visited a few of the classic bars around town. I prefer to keep it pretty low key and mostly play blackjack if I gamble. I'm curious what everyone else enjoys doing when they visit? Any neat little places you like to go while you're there? One place I think is underrated is "Lounge 107" in the Stratosphere. It's a bar/lounge 107 stories up that looks over all of vegas. It is free to enter, quiet, and they run buy-one-get-one drinks from time to time.

I don't have a whole lot of experience there aside from the really touristy stuff, but I enjoy blackjack as well. Last time I was there I had to go a few blocks off Fremont St to find favorable tables, can't remember the name of the place but it had really low ceilings for a casino. Never been up the Stratosphere. Where have you stayed there? Ever hit any of their ranges?

The El Cortez has the best game in Vegas still for $5 but for reasons I won't go into it isn't a lot of fun to play there for very long. If you are willing to play $25 a hand you can still find good games most places except for the top few casinos. Just make sure you aren't playing a 6 to 5 game.

I've stayed at Treasure Island, Caesar's, MGM, Mirage, Mandalay Bay, Excalibur, Paris, Rio, Flamingo, Stratosphere, SLS, Circus Circus, Golden Nugget, Mainstreet station, El Cortez, Green Valley Ranch...A bunch of them. I used to stay at a new one everytime I was there for work if it was in the budget. Now it get's old quick and I stay either Treasure Island or El Cortez...one downtown one on the strip and both best bang for your buck IMO. Check out Lounge 107 next time. It's pretty darn cool.

I have not hit the ranges there. I had a girl take me to a desert shooting area and it was packed. I was waiting to hear someone scream out because they had been shot. Didn't feel safe at all there and haven't been back.

Actually I think it was El Cortez where I played! I can't drop $25/hand so I definitely have to look around. I take it since you've stayed there multiple times it's alright? I'll be in Vegas for SHOT next year so I'm taking mental notes.

I'm the same way when shooting with a big group of people. I'd be triple nervous around a bunch of tourists with FA guns.

I like it there. I highly recommend spending the extra 5-10$ a night and getting a cabana room. DO NOT stay on the first floor and try to get a room on the north side of the building. Bottom floor is too loud to sleep because of the street noise.

Awesome, thanks for the tips. Any tips on talking the girlfriend into staying downtown versus the strip?:D

If I were going to take ectasy, lsd or shrooms I might lock up my guns. I haven't ever had any trouble controlling myself while drinking alcohol or smoking

Yeah....$$$! Downtown is neat. If she hasn't seen either...i'd recommend at least getting lunch or something on the strip. I'm by no means an expert but if you've got other questions later shoot me a message.

Generally, there are only a few reasons to go to Vegas, and nearly all of them are business related. I really cut my Shot Show trip short this year (family stuff going on, plus some nasty weather was coming in). I used to stay in downtown at the Plaza, room rates were usually <$30/night (for a weekday). I never gambled much, my standard is to put a $100 on red at the roulette table, Win or lose, that was my one bet.

Stuff I like to do:

The Clark County Museum system has an "atomic testing museum" it's a little pricey for admission (IIRC it's like $30, and for an extra $5, you get to see the X-Files themed area-51 exhibit) I didn't care much for the area-51 thing, as it's mostly fiction even though there's a lot of really solid documentation of projects they've worked on there. The Museum itself is awesome, and despite the steep pricetag is totally a good 4-5 hours worth of stuff to do if you really sit down and watch every exhibit, but if you're not all that detail oriented (or not that interested) you can blow through the whole thing in <hour and feel kinda ripped off.

On a hot afternoon, there's the las vegas springs preserve, it's kinda like a botanical garden, normal garden, and wild area. I think it's about $20 to get in, way cheaper than redrock, and is nicely put together. I find the place quite relaxing when the weather is hot.

If you get the opportunity, heading up towards mt Charleston area is a nice way to get out of the heat, icebox canyon. If you had asked last year (before all the rains) I would have recommended the town-site of St Thomas. I'm sure it's back underwater at this point. While you're there, you can check out the gold strike canyon hotsprings.

There's a really good sushi joint called Hikari, out on Buffalo, it's fantastic, and probably the best sushi place I know of in the state of nevada.

Since I travel for business, I'm usually by myself, and I'm usually not looking for social activities. If you have people with you, I'm sure the bar and nightclub scene is way more fun, it's pretty lame when you're flying solo.
