The Band of Brothers were extraordinary men. I had an uncle who was one of them. He finally died of the war wounds in his mind in May 2017. He regretted for decades that he had killed so many young German kids, the same age as he at the time. One night, he and Shifty Powers were tasked with defending an open field that intel said was from where the Germans would come. They enemy did come and were met with 3600 rounds of .30-06 ammo for the M1919 machine gun our two soldiers had. Come the morning, they went out and counted 97 dead German boys. My uncle said looking into the faces of those he'd killed-- and had forever taken their futures-- affected him for the rest of his life. He lived, enjoyed a family and had a long civilian career. The dead were left with nothing. Their parents were left with the grief only the loss of a child can generate. General William Tecumseh Sherman said, "War is all hell." The men who've survived it would say the same...
