I thought I'd update this, even though it's now 5 years old.

I've been having a lot of issues with the Sawyer Mini's over the last few years. Restrictive flow, and just outright failure to pass any water. Since I live in a desert, there simply aren't too many times where I'm going to be filtering water to drink. This isn't a back-flushing issue, this is mostly involving brand new filter elements, just trying to get them ready with regular tap water. I've since gone back to purification tablets.

You might want to check out what kinda hotness is out there. I would recommend looking at the Quansheng K5(8) and it's alternate firmware, mainly because one of the big things you want in a tough situation is the ability to keep your devices charged up (the K5 charges with a USB-C cable), and you will want a radio that can receive a lot of sources of information. So it may be a good option.
Thanks for that information, I'll definitely look at those

Simple, lets toss ideas and help each other out. Depending on where you live in this great country there is always a threat to our way of life and things that can make the crazies go crazy!

What event are you trying to be ready for?
What do you have in your vehicle to get you home to loved ones?
What if your vehicle doesn't run or the roads are gone?
Can you communicate with loved ones?
Are you fit enough to make it home?

These are just some of the things to think about. Let me know your thoughts and what you are going to do.
Honestly, where I live is mostly suburban/rural small to medium small town population. The most likely problem to occur here would be a vehicle break down, while traveling long distances in the desert between areas of civilization. So, priorities are water, basic tools, extra oil, convenient snack foods, and a self protection firearm. So staying on top of vehicle maintenance is a high priority for me. That, and making sure to have appropriate clothing including extra clothing for possible changes in the weather. Most other scenarios would likely call for a bug-in situation at home. So plenty of food and paper goods storage preps. Firearms and ammo is well covered.
