Sounds like a Ford vs Chevy debate to me! I'd probably go with the Smith, but it's been a very long time since I've shot either of them.

I am a S&W fan from the time I was issued one in 1977 and have a few with the 686 being my most accurate. Having said that my friends new GP100 Match is really nice. You will just have to finger each and see which one feels best in your hand as they are BOTH world class guns.

I shot a friends Taurus Tracker 38/.357 I really liked everything about it. Nice trigger comfortable grips and good price.

If you are buying an older one I would go with the S&W.
If you are buying new I would go with the Ruger for the simple fact that I can't stand the trigger lock on the new S&W's.
You can also expect to pay more for the S&W.
Also when it comes to being rugged and well built you can't beat a Ruger.
You could tie it to the back of your truck and drag it to the range and it would still function. Their warranty is outstanding also.
