RENO, Nev. (News 4 & Fox 11) — After two of America's most deadly mass shootings recently, News 4-Fox 11 is taking a closer look at Nevada's gun laws.

People interested in buying a gun from a licensed dealer must fill out a federal form with personal information and a series of questions.

The gun store will send that form to the Nevada Department of Public Safety, which can approve the sale, deny it, or delay it by three days while the department investigates further.

Felons, fugitives, people dishonorably discharged from the military and domestic abusers are prohibited from purchasing firearms here.

There's also a question on the form that, in theory, would prevent the mentally ill from buying guns, but local gun store owner Sharon Oren said it doesn't always work.

"Let's say if you have a mental issue and you do not disclose it on this paper, the background check people have no way of knowing it because of HIPPA," said Oren, owner of Maccabee Arms.
