Geez..... no wonder the British Empire was able to conquer them for so long.

I'm not an expert on Izz-lomm, but I think they are punishing themselves for their sins since the same observance of the previous year. Christians give-up something for Lent, such as eating french fries in preparation for Easter. These guys flagellate themselves in order to feel some pain for their sins and by doing so, reinforce their commitment to not perpetrate those same sins during the coming year. But what do I know, huh?
