What a great way to end the legislative session--with our last two bills being signed into law by the Governor!

Once again, your activism has paid off. On Thursday, the Governor signed SB 1177 and SB 1251 into law. Your calls and e-mails pushed both bills through long delays in the legislature and, now, have convinced the Governor to sign them.

SB 1177 requires the Department of Public Safety to send a renewal reminder notice and renewal application to holders of concealed weapons permits at least 60 days before the expiration date of a permit. Many of you have contacted AzCDL this year regarding problems with permit renewals and we are hopeful that this measure will reduce problems for those of you that maintain a permit.

SB 1251 expands the definition of armed robbery to include situations where the perpetrator takes, or attempts to take, a deadly weapon from others at the scene. While this may seem like a minor change to the law, such situations will no longer be considered mere property crimes and therefore provide legal justification for a greater level of self-defense action on the part of the victims.
